The scam of "filmlike" cameras

Have you noticed that videos or articles claiming that a piece of digital gear has "filmlike" qualities almost always talk about old equipment?

The Sony A7sIII which came out just a couple of years ago?
Nuh-uh, not filmlike.
But the Canon 5D from 2005?
Oh boy, would you look at that!
And the Nikon D200 from the same year with its pristine CCD sensor?
Now we're talking, brother!

But if assessments about this "filmlike" quality of camera bodies (i.e. sensors) were based on objective metrics and not merely upon nostalgia or profit-induced clickbait, we would see articles from back in the day also tell us how the brand new Canon 5D almost looks like film. In fact, the farther you go back in time, the more reviewers would have been accustomed to shooting film, and would have lived through the digital transition, making them fully qualified to spot and appreciate such similarities!

But alas, articles from 2005 didn't talk about how the latest digicam looked like a point and shoot loaded with Kodak Gold, or the latest full frame DSLR could almost be confused for a Nikon F5 shooting Portra 400.

It's all bullshit, it's all hype.
